Special Delivery: The Legend of Stork and Baby

For years, childbirth in Western culture has been associated with storks. Their images appear in baby shower invitations, announcements, and lawn stork rentals.

As with many aspects of modern culture that have been passed down through the generations, the reason for associating storks with childbirth and babies is not well known. So what is the reason for the connection between storks and babies? Surely what can a bird have in common with babies? Wouldn’t a dove or even a sparrow be a little more babylike as opposed to a bird which is given to eating from dumpsites?

Storks are common in Europe, especially in the Netherlands and Poland during the summer months, and will migrate to Africa during the winter. One of the distinct characteristics of the stork is the attachment they exhibit to their nests and will frequently return to the same nesting spot season after season. This habit shaped the belief of storks mating with a single partner for life since it was translated as fidelity, a desirable attribute. In later years however, research has shown that storks are actually serial monogamists and may choose a different mate each season; the attachment is more to its nest than it is to its mate. Yet another factor that fueled the fascination of storks’ association with babies was their tendency to stay with their young for a significant amount of time even after they learn to fly.

stork and babyBut there were also a number of amusing and less scientific reasons for the connection between storks and babies. One was the discomfort in the Victorian era (and still an issue for parents today) that surrounded the inevitable question from children on where babies come from. Instead of lunging into a potentially embarrassing explanation of the human reproduction process, some parents dismiss the question with the response “The stork brings babies.”

Another amusing reason has its roots in ancient European festivals. A good number of such events would take place towards the end of June and involved jubilant parties replete with intoxicating drinks. This led to the inevitable as sexual inhibition was much lower during the festivals. In line with human gestation, the effects would be evident nine months later as many women gave birth around this time more than any other. Interestingly, this was around the same time when storks would be returning from winter migration. Telling young ones that babies were brought by storks was thus relatively easy to do as the ‘evidence’ seemed irrefutable.

Nursery Lights, Part 5 – Lighting Safety

Once the perfect lighting is set up in the baby’s room, go over everything carefully to ensure none of the nursery lights pose a danger to the baby as he grows.

  • Share/Bookmark

Many new parents don’t think much of safety beyond preventing fire hazards because they know a small newborn is not going to crawl up the dresser and play with a lamp.

Babies Play With Everything in Sight

baby touching power socket

Babies and toddlers are curious busy bees. Eliminate any potential hazards before they can get to them.

Babies grow quickly and can move quickly, too! Often the biggest dangers are the ones you don’t see or expect. For instance, you can tuck the cord of a lamp behind a long curtain, only to walk in and find a curious baby under the curtain tugging on it. And what is hidden from an infant is often not going to stay hidden to a toddler, so think long term.

Avoid Corded Lights

The safest way to light the nursery is to stay completely away from lighting sources that have cords. This avoids the risk of a small baby getting his neck or other body parts wrapped up in them, as well as the danger of the infant pulling a lamp down on top of himself. But corded light in the nursery is a practical issue for most parents, so safety is a concern.

Position Lighting and Outlets Out of Children’s Reach

Try not to plug lights into low outlets, even if you have to put in new outlets that are specifically placed up high, behind heavy furniture, or very close to where the light will be plugged in. This allows you to tie up the cord without anything dangling. If you are using lamps or specialty lights that have exposed bulbs, they must be placed very high where there is zero chance of a child getting a hold of it, or it has to be placed out of the nursery.

These safety risks exist outside of the nursery as well. Go through your entire home and eliminate all dangers to your little one. Remember, the right lighting will be so functional you barely think about it. That is what you ultimately want to achieve with your nursery lighting.

Nursery Lights, Part 4 – Specialty Nursery Lights

Specialty lighting is often used by home decorators to give that final touch of perfection to a room or home. It can be used to the same effect in the nursery.

  • Share/Bookmark

This is where you get to think completely of aesthetics and find something that gives your décor that final touch of personality.

deco cube night light

This cube nightlight gives off a soft glow.

There are some specialty lighting sources that are quite functional, such as the light cube. These cubes give off soft light to a small area of the room and never get too hot to touch.

Then there are some more extravagant specialty lighting sources that can completely steal the show and become the primary focus of the nursery. We are talking about specially designed chandeliers that dangle from the baby’s ceiling with great decorative flair. You can find these chandeliers all over the Internet with many of them being hand designed just for the nursery.

There are also some types of specialty lighting designed to hang flat on the ceiling or the walls. Look for wall sconces and ceiling medallions that give a touch of personality, fun, and whimsy.

Finally, consider adding personalized touches to lighting sources within the room. A plain nursery lamp can be finished off with a footprint and handprint of your baby on the side or you can add fur trim and new fabric to the lamp.

truck lamp

This wonderful truck lamp is available from simplybabyfurniture.com.

You may also want to consider tall floor lamps which can often be found just for the nursery. Decorative floor lamps that are more than just straight poles can also be chosen if they fit the overall style of your nursery.

The best way to incorporate specialty lighting in the nursery is to think about those well placed area lights. What can you do to make those lights extra special for your baby’s nursery?

We have moved from the functional aspects of nursery lighting to the playful and fun. We’ll wrap it all up with some important thoughts on safety next.

Nursery Lights, Part 3: Nursery Nightlights for Mom and Baby

Nursery nightlights are available in many shapes and styles. Choose one that lets you nurse your baby in the dark night yet allows him to sleep comfortably.

  • Share/Bookmark

It’s clear that you need some source of very soft light in the nursery during the nighttime hours. Most parents aren’t comfortable laying a small baby down in a completely black room and leaving them. You also don’t want to come into the room for a late night feeding or to check up on the baby and start bumping into things and stubbing your toes.

Turtle Twilight Constellation Night Light

This turtle twilight constellation nightlight can illuminate the whole room.

Yet, there is some debate about placing nightlights in the nursery, especially when a small baby is first establishing their sleeping habits. Many experts believe that having light around the clock will interfere with their natural ability to regulate sleep and may confuse some babies about when it is time to sleep and when it is time to be awake.

On the other hand parents have been using nursery nightlights in the baby’s room for generations without any tragic results. So, how do you know if nightlights are safe in your nursery?

The best way to handle this is to meet both arguments in the middle. You clearly need some type of light in the evening for your own comfort and for the sake of safety. What you don’t necessarily need is the typical nightlight designed for a nursery!

A paper train nightlight from Pottery Barn is perfect for a little boy's room.

First consider your primary light source that you established in the beginning. If you placed a dimmer on it and the light is far enough away from the crib, you can possibly use that light on its dimmest setting during the night.

If that produces too much light or is placed too near the crib or bassinet, you will need to think of creative ways to sneak in some light without the baby realizing it is there.

There are stuffed animals that have lights built into their bellies and some room fresheners that plug into an outlet are equipped with a very dim light. Now, have you heard of specialty nursery lights? We will go there next…

Nursery Lights, Part 2: Lamps and Other Ambient Lighting

Sprinkle lamps and other ambient nursery lights around functional areas of the baby’s room such as the changing and feeding stations.

  • Share/Bookmark

You have established the importance of considering your main lighting source prior to decorating and setting up the furniture, but what about smaller nursery lights? Where should they be placed? How do you make sure they are safe for the baby as they start to grow more active and curious? This is an important issue, though it is best tackled once you have the primary light established and are moving in the furniture.

Nursery area lights come in all styles like this adorable ladybug lamp from All Kids Lamps.

Placement

You want your area nursery lights to be placed where you will most need them. Think about areas of the room where you will most likely be providing care to the baby. For instance, you will need some light while changing diapers, dressing the baby, reading with the baby, and perhaps some soft light while feeding the baby in the middle of the night.

You could just put area lights where you have the space, but they won’t be very functional once the baby gets here. Function is more important than appearances!

Style

Your chosen style of lighting is where you get to worry about appearances. Try to find small lamps that fit with the theme or color scheme of the nursery or get plain colored fabric lamp shades and decorate them yourself so they fit perfectly. You can also consider wall sconces if they give the right style and overall feel to the house.

Lambs and Ivy Tivoli garden lamp.

Safety

When working with nursery lamps, you have to make sure the cords never create a danger to your baby. Small babies will naturally grab onto items like cords if they are exposed, and that creates a danger of pulling the lamp down on top of them and of wrapping the cord around their neck or limbs. Tie cords up and tuck them behind heavy furniture, up high, or other places where they are completely out of reach.

Now, what about lighting for those late night feedings? We will discuss the issue of night lights in the nursery next.

Nursery Lights, Part I: Plan for a Primary Light Source

Unless you like walking into furniture in the middle of the night or waking the baby with bright lights, start to plan your nursery lighting needs early.

  • Share/Bookmark

Lighting is one of the very important features of the nursery that so many parents think about way too late in the game. Incorrect lighting will become a nuisance when you are trying to get your new baby back to sleep at two in the morning, while the perfect lighting will be so functional you never pay much attention to it.

Review Your Options

You first want to make sure there is one primary light source in the room which can be dimmed according to what is currently happening inside the room. This may be a series of recessed lights that run across one area of the room, or perhaps you could hang a nursery chandelier, ceiling fan with light, or other wall light that fits with your baby nursery décor.

Add a Dimmer

You are simply trying to create a foundation source of light that can saturate the room when you need it to while delivering a low key glimmer at other times. Adding a dimmer is extremely important as that is how you will control the amount of light being splashed into the room at any given time.

Decide Early

It is best to start thinking about your primary source of light before you start to move the crib and baby furniture into the room or painting the mural on the wall. You don’t want to be forced to take all of that down in order to get the lighting situated.

For a small nursery, one primary light that can be brightened and dimmed may be enough to cover all areas of the room, but you want to try to incorporate smaller lights in critical positions throughout the nursery. This will allow you to turn on soft light in specific locations when you don’t want to bother baby with a lot of light.

Stay tuned for the next discussion about how lamps and other types of area lights can be incorporated into the nursery.

Your Personalized Diaper Disposal System in 3 Easy Steps

Deciding on a diaper disposal system is not an exciting subject for new parents, but it is absolutely essential. Plan ahead for a simple system that works.

  • Share/Bookmark
baby wearing diaper

Get ready, Mom!

Every home is different. You live a different lifestyle than your best friend who just had a baby and your home has its own unique rhythm and daily flow. That’s why it is so important to make sure your diaper disposal system works well with the way you live.

The right system will prevent odors in the home and make changing diapers more convenient and pleasant. The wrong system will turn your home into a urinal and become a danger to your health and that of your baby. Use the following five steps to create a system that will do the former and prevent the latter at all costs.

#1: Determine whether you will be using disposable diapers, cloth diapers, or a mixture of both.

Your diaper disposal system will be different depending on the type of diapers that you will be using. For disposable diapers, you can purchase tightly-sealed diaper units like the Diaper Genie which will individually package each diaper inside plastic and then store it inside the container where odors cannot escape. You can also choose to purchase your own container but make sure it has a very tight light to trap odors.

diaper genie

Diaper Genie by Playtex

For cloth diapers, you will need a sealed container to hold them until they are ready to be washed. They should be washed regularly, but you may still want something that seals tight to block odor.

You may have a mix of diaper pails in your home if you are going to use a mix of diapers.

#2: Determine how often you are likely
to empty the diaper pails.

The type of diaper pail you choose as well as where you choose to put it depends on how often you plan to empty it. One great idea for disposable diapers is to place the diaper pail next to the trash can. If you empty the trash can every day or every other day you can easily empty out the dirty diapers at the same time.

A cloth diaper pail should go in the laundry room so it is out of the main living areas of the home and ready to be washed at laundry time. Consider how often you will be washing them when determining the size of your pail. If this is your first baby go with a larger pail than you think you may need as you’ll be quite surprised how many dirty diapers accumulate in a single afternoon!

#3: Determine where you will most likely be changing the baby.

An efficient diaper disposal system may include smaller pails or temporary storing buckets in areas of the home where the baby is most often changed. This is only realistic since you won’t always want to get up and walk across the home every time you change the baby.

Finally, make sure to stock up on plastic bags and other supplies that may be needed to keep your disposal system functioning. There is nothing worse than emptying the pail and realizing you have no new bags to put back in.

5 Steps to the Perfect Baby Neutral Nursery

Creating a baby neutral nursery can be easy if you follow these simple guidelines. Begin with baby nursery decor such as furniture, and the rest will follow.

  • Share/Bookmark

You can be just as creative when designing a baby neutral nursery as you would with a gender-specific nursery. In fact, it can be more freeing on the creative level since you don’t have the stereotypical choices in your head such as blue for boys and pink for girls. Instead of thinking of the perfect princess bedroom or the masculine sports and trucks themes, you can play with colors and come up with something you truly adore.

Get a sense for what type of room you would like to create, such as something fun and playful, or something that is simply beautiful and eye-catching. Take that basic idea and follow through these five steps to create the perfect unisex nursery.

Carey crib bedding set by Caden Lane

Bold, beautiful and whimsical, the Carey crib bedding set is perfect for the baby neutral nursery.

#1: Select Furniture

Many people start off by thinking of color options, but for a baby neutral nursery it actually helps to start with the furniture. Look at the design and style of different cribs to find one that fits the type of nursery you want to create. You may select a very modern crib with coordinating dresser and changing station. Or, maybe you want something more traditional.

You could also opt for a bassinet or baby moses basket with stand rather than a full-sized crib. This works great for a smaller-sized nursery, and you can always add in a full-sized crib when the baby outgrows the basket or bassinet.

#2: Select Primary Color

Now it’s time to start thinking about the dominant color for the walls as well as coordinating baby nursery décor. You may want to keep it simple with white, cream, or another pastel color. Or, pick something bright and stimulating so it can grab the baby’s attention as their eyesight and curiosity develop.

Even if you want multiple colors in the room, it helps to start with just one color selection that you can build upon.

#3: Select Accent Colors

Now, select at least one color that could create some contrast with your primary color. For instance, if you decide to go with white walls, you may select bright blue and orange as accent colors. You want something that will stand out against the primary color. These colors can be used as splashes in select places around the room or they can be used in larger doses.

When thinking of colors, don’t just think in terms of your walls. It’s something that should coordinate throughout the entire room, including the furniture and baby nursery décor hanging on the wall.

#4: Play with Patterns or Shapes

You may be happy with solid painted walls, perhaps with a border. If you want something more elaborate, play with shapes and pictures, perhaps creating your own mural if you have some artistic talent. Gender-neutral themes include the alphabet, animals, the garden and beach. You can also use fabric with different textures on the walls. Even just adding decorative plates around outlets and light switches can make a big difference.

#5: Coordinate Bedding & Accessories

Finally, find ways to coordinate your bedding and all of the accessories throughout the room with those chosen primary and accent colors. For instance, Caden Lane’s Carey crib bedding set uses several bold colors and patterns that can easily coordinate with many color palettes. Keep the pillows and other baby nursery décor inside the crib minimal, but you can play with the color of sheets, a mobile hanging on the crib, and wall hangings.

You have complete freedom when it comes to designing the perfect baby neutral nursery! Find colors that stand out or those that create a soft, gentle surrounding. It’s all up to your unique vision of what your unisex baby’s room should be.

Nursery Gliders vs. Nursery Rockers: Which is Right for You?

Nursery rockers have been a parenting tradition for generations but today, parents may decide to switch to nursery gliders instead.

  • Share/Bookmark

Nursery rockers have been staples for parents for many generations. The rocking motion soothes a crying baby and easily puts a restless baby to sleep while providing relaxation and a bit of soothing for parents at the same time. Today, nursery rockers are still available but we also have nursery gliders to select from as well.

nursery rocker

Beautiful nursery rockers help lull babies to sleep.

Nursery Rockers

A rocking chair for the nursery doesn’t necessarily have to be any different from a rocking chair that you would select for your front porch or living room, and in fact you may want to purchase a few good rockers and position them throughout the home. They are so comfortable and convenient that you may find yourself still rocking your children and enjoying time with them when they are five, six, or older.

Rockers are typically made from solid wood and can be found in a variety of colors from natural stained wood to painted colors. Some can even be decorated personally to fit into your nursery beautifully. The only rule is everything used on the chair must be completely nontoxic since it will be going into the nursery with a newborn baby.

When purchasing a rocking chair for the nursery, keep some things in mind:

  • It may not be very comfortable without a good cushion since it is made from hard wood.
  • Not all rocking chairs rock the same so make sure to sit in your chosen chair first and make sure it rocks easily.
  • Check that the chair does not make any squeaks or squeals as the tiniest of noises becomes a nuisance in the nursery.
  • Look at floor models that have been in the store for awhile to see how it is likely to hold up over time.

gliders nursery

Nursery gliders have a forward and backward motion.

Nursery Gliders

There are several things that separate gliders from traditional rocking chairs:

  • Gliders move forward and backward in a straight diagonal while traditional rockers have more of an arched, rainbow-shaped front to back motion.
  • Gliders are built more like recliner chairs with more cushioning for comfort.
  • Gliders often have moving footstools that glide along with the chair.
  • Gliders are more like heavy furniture and cannot be decorated or painted to fit your nursery the way a wooden rocker can be decorated.

The choice between a glider and rocker often comes down to a preference in how they move. Some find that gliders are smoother and easier to keep going while others prefer the more traditional feel of a rocking chair.

If you aren’t sure which one might feel more natural to you, get out to a few baby stores and feel the difference between the two. Also keep in mind that you could easily move a glider into another room of the home after your babies are grown. They are so comfortable you will enjoy just gliding in them yourself through the years.

Whether you choose a glider or rocker make sure babies are safe at all times from pinching. Always know where a crawling baby is as you rock as they can get an arm or leg under the rocker’s legs.
