As with many aspects of modern culture that have been passed down through the generations, the reason for associating storks with childbirth and babies is not well known. So what is the reason for the connection between storks and babies? Surely what can a bird have in common with babies? Wouldn’t a dove or even a sparrow be a little more babylike as opposed to a bird which is given to eating from dumpsites?

Storks are common in Europe, especially in the Netherlands and Poland during the summer months, and will migrate to Africa during the winter. One of the distinct characteristics of the stork is the attachment they exhibit to their nests and will frequently return to the same nesting spot season after season. This habit shaped the belief of storks mating with a single partner for life since it was translated as fidelity, a desirable attribute. In later years however, research has shown that storks are actually serial monogamists and may choose a different mate each season; the attachment is more to its nest than it is to its mate. Yet another factor that fueled the fascination of storks’ association with babies was their tendency to stay with their young for a significant amount of time even after they learn to fly.

But there were also a number of amusing and less scientific reasons for the connection between storks and babies. One was the discomfort in the Victorian era (and still an issue for parents today) that surrounded the inevitable question from children on where babies come from. Instead of lunging into a potentially embarrassing explanation of the human reproduction process, some parents dismiss the question with the response “The stork brings babies.”

Another amusing reason has its roots in ancient European festivals. A good number of such events would take place towards the end of June and involved jubilant parties replete with intoxicating drinks. This led to the inevitable as sexual inhibition was much lower during the festivals. In line with human gestation, the effects would be evident nine months later as many women gave birth around this time more than any other. Interestingly, this was around the same time when storks would be returning from winter migration. Telling young ones that babies were brought by storks was thus relatively easy to do as the ‘evidence’ seemed irrefutable.

Review Your Options

 You first want to make sure there is one primary light source in the room which can be dimmed according to what is currently happening inside the room. Add a Dimmer

You are simply trying to create a foundation source of light that can saturate the room when you need it to while delivering a low key glimmer at other times. Decide Early

For a small nursery, one primary light that can be brightened and dimmed may be enough to cover all areas of the room, but you want to try to incorporate smaller lights in critical positions throughout the nursery. Every home is different. You live a different lifestyle than your best friend who just had a baby and your home has its own unique rhythm and daily flow. That’s why it is so important to make sure your diaper disposal system works well with the way you live.

The right system will prevent odors in the home and make changing diapers more convenient and pleasant. The wrong system will turn your home into a urinal and become a danger to your health and that of your baby. Use the following five steps to create a system that will do the former and prevent the latter at all costs. 
 
#1: Determine whether you will be using disposable diapers, cloth diapers, or a mixture of both.

Your diaper disposal system will be different depending on the type of diapers that you will be using. For disposable diapers, you can purchase tightly-sealed diaper units like the Diaper Genie which will individually package each diaper inside plastic and then store it inside the container where odors cannot escape. You can also choose to purchase your own container but make sure it has a very tight light to trap odors.

 

For cloth diapers, you will need a sealed container to hold them until they are ready to be washed. They should be washed regularly, but you may still want something that seals tight to block odor.

You may have a mix of diaper pails in your home if you are going to use a mix of diapers.

#2: Determine how often you are likely
to empty the diaper pails.

The type of diaper pail you choose as well as where you choose to put it depends on how often you plan to empty it. One great idea for disposable diapers is to place the diaper pail next to the trash can. If you empty the trash can every day or every other day you can easily empty out the dirty diapers at the same time.

A cloth diaper pail should go in the laundry room so it is out of the main living areas of the home and ready to be washed at laundry time. Consider how often you will be washing them when determining the size of your pail. If this is your first baby go with a larger pail than you think you may need as you’ll be quite surprised how many dirty diapers accumulate in a single afternoon!

#3: Determine where you will most likely be changing the baby.

An efficient diaper disposal system may include smaller pails or temporary storing buckets in areas of the home where the baby is most often changed. This is only realistic since you won’t always want to get up and walk across the home every time you change the baby.

Finally, make sure to stock up on plastic bags and other supplies that may be needed to keep your disposal system functioning. There is nothing worse than emptying the pail and realizing you have no new bags to put back in.

You can be just as creative when designing a baby neutral nursery as you would with a gender-specific nursery. In fact, it can be more freeing on the creative level since you don’t have the stereotypical choices in your head such as blue for boys and pink for girls. Instead of thinking of the perfect princess bedroom or the masculine sports and trucks themes, you can play with colors and come up with something you truly adore.

Get a sense for what type of room you would like to create, such as something fun and playful, or something that is simply beautiful and eye-catching. Take that basic idea and follow through these five steps to create the perfect unisex nursery.

 

#1: Select Furniture

Many people start off by thinking of color options, but for a baby neutral nursery it actually helps to start with the furniture. Nursery rockers have been staples for parents for many generations. The rocking motion soothes a crying baby and easily puts a restless baby to sleep while providing relaxation and a bit of soothing for parents at the same time. Nursery Rockers

A rocking chair for the nursery doesn’t necessarily have to be any different from a rocking chair that you would select for your front porch or living room, and in fact you may want to purchase a few good rockers and position them throughout the home. They are so comfortable and convenient that you may find yourself still rocking your children and enjoying time with them when they are five, six, or older.

Rockers are typically made from solid wood and can be found in a variety of colors from natural stained wood to painted colors. The only rule is everything used on the chair must be completely nontoxic since it will be going into the nursery with a newborn baby.

When purchasing a rocking chair for the nursery, keep some things in mind:

There are several things that separate gliders from traditional rocking chairs:
