I was always the visual type. In one of my earliest memories, at about three or four years of age, I was sitting on the floor by my Mom’s feet, cutting out pictures and ads from the newspaper that appealed to me. Of course, it was just all letters and shapes. My little fingers struggled to hold the pair of scissors, and try as I might, the edges invariably came out jagged. I was lost in a cutting frenzy, happy and content, simply a little girl’s idea of heaven.

I remember this because I gathered the pile of cutouts – about a dozen – and carefully stored them in the bottom drawer of a wooden chest. It had an oriental motif with many grooves carved into its surface, and intricate floral inlays were scattered throughout. Over the years while rummaging around, I’d inevitably come across this same pile – jagged edges and all – and the memory of that tactile, blissful moment would be recalled.

It’s Just Like Playing

It’s no surprise then that later, I gravitated towards graphic design. For some 25 years, I got paid for cutting and pasting, and when computers came along, moving things around on screen. Observing me once, my mother commented, “It looks like you’re playing.” Imagine my excitement when, recently, I discovered baby nursery wall stickers. Because I don’t have kids (13 nieces and nephews notwithstanding), all this is new to me. My immediate thought was that whoever came up with this decorating idea is absolutely brilliant. Once again, it made me want to have a nursery with the walls as my canvas.

 Pre-Pasted Cutouts

Wall stickers come in two main forms. The first is pre-pasted cutouts. Fixed with water-activated glue, all you need to do is wet the glue-covered surface, then stick it on the desired surface. Pre-pasted cutouts are effectively a special form of wallpaper with baby-friendly designs. Apply them to the surface of virtually every object in the nursery ranging from the crib, to the mini cabinets, tables, baby chairs and if you’re really ambitious, even the rocking chair that’s used to lull the baby to sleep!

Self-Stick Decals

The other type of wall sticker is the self-stick design. The advantage that the self-stick variety has is the ability to relocate the sticker from one surface to another with no damage to the sticker itself. The only thing you need to ensure is that whatever surface it is placed on is clean as this will contribute to a longer usability.

So if you’ve come up with the core components of your baby nursery but are still grappling with what to do in terms of decoration, don’t worry. Wall stickers gel so well with the nursery environment that visitors will be blown away, and will find it difficult to believe that what you have is not a painted mural.
