Child Growth Charts as Functional Art
A child growth chart records your infant’s increasing physical stature. It’s also a wonderful souvenir whose value appreciates with the passage of time.
I grew up in a busy household, what with six siblings and me all born within ten years. When it came time to record each other’s growing heights, the process became very haphazard. “Okay, Vic, come here, you’re next,” my older brother would bark. The scene of the crime was his room. I would take my turn to stand against the pale green walls while a ruler was placed over my head. Sometimes, we would record our cousins’ heights, too, if they were around. The markings–names scribbled beside horizontal ticks, often in pencil, other times in ink–after a while became a jumbled mess.
I don’t think my parents were around to witness our latest graffiti masterpieces or this art would have surely met with some disapproval. Even so, back in the sixties and seventies, growth charts didn’t exist, at least not where I came from. From time to time, I remember those markings catching my eye, and for a few moments I’d examine the scribbles closely and marvel at our growth. It was a time capsule of sorts.

Take control of your children’s own curiosity and competitive spirits (“I’m taller than you!”) and you might also be spared a wall clean-up. Now, growth charts are readily available in many patterns and designs to easily animate a newborn’s room. Simply pick one that coordinates with your nursery theme, like a giraffe for safari baby bedding, or a flower to complement a garden theme. You can also select growth charts that have specific gender appeal, like a princess for girls, or transportation vehicles for boys. The chart also serves to engage your baby’s attention and provides him with visual interest as he begins to crawl around the room. Later, you can fold it up and put it away, or consider framing it as a nice souvenir for a child well loved.
