Child Growth Charts as Functional Art

A child growth chart records your infant’s increasing physical stature. It’s also a wonderful souvenir whose value appreciates with the passage of time.

I grew up in a busy household, what with six siblings and me all born within ten years. When it came time to record each other’s growing heights, the process became very haphazard. “Okay, Vic, come here, you’re next,” my older brother would bark. The scene of the crime was his room. I would take my turn to stand against the pale green walls while a ruler was placed over my head. Sometimes, we would record our cousins’ heights, too, if they were around. The markings–names scribbled beside horizontal ticks, often in pencil, other times in ink–after a while became a jumbled mess.

I don’t think my parents were around to witness our latest graffiti masterpieces or this art would have surely met with some disapproval. Even so, back in the sixties and seventies, growth charts didn’t exist, at least not where I came from. From time to time, I remember those markings catching my eye, and for a few moments I’d examine the scribbles closely and marvel at our growth. It was a time capsule of sorts.

Take control of your children’s own curiosity and competitive spirits (“I’m taller than you!”) and you might also be spared a wall clean-up. Now, growth charts are readily available in many patterns and designs to easily animate a newborn’s room. Simply pick one that coordinates with your nursery theme, like a giraffe for safari baby bedding, or a flower to complement a garden theme. You can also select growth charts that have specific gender appeal, like a princess for girls, or transportation vehicles for boys. The chart also serves to engage your baby’s attention and provides him with visual interest as he begins to crawl around the room. Later, you can fold it up and put it away, or consider framing it as a nice souvenir for a child well loved.

When I was in kindergarten, I fell in love with a plastic, baby pink and blue watch that I may have picked out at the corner grocery store for 99 cents. Of course, it had no moving parts but it was oh-so-fab-O with a wide polka dot strap, and a big cameo face the size of my wrist, its embossed surface painted in gold. I absolutely adored this watch. It was the ’60s and everyone was groovin’, including this little five-year-old who also remembers wearing fishnet stockings, to church (of all places)!

duckies clockOver time, my tastes have changed as I find myself gravitating to more neutral and classic styles. But I still like lava lamps plus a whole bunch of other trends, from sleek, contemporary Scandinavian designs to kitschy vintage finds. Even garden gnomes have their place in this respectable designer’s repertoire. And so it is that my search for choice nursery wall clocks runs the gamut of visual expressions, and I adore them all.

Here is an adorable Little Duckies wall clock. These cute waddling yellow ducks look like they walked off my Dick and Jane books from first grade, ready to animate just about any baby nursery. Many more clocks evoke a nostalgic feel that parents can appreciate, and have a playful sense of humor to spark kids’ imaginations like Rocket Boy blasting off in a space age adventure, and the Red Engine fire truck zooming to the rescue.

If you’re looking for something more dreamy to coordinate with delicate crib bedding sets, how about one featuring a fairy so your kids can wish upon a star as they doze off for the night, or a princess for the little princess in your life. Of course, there are clocks featuring characters in fairy tales like the magical Alice in Wonderland that comes complete with a swinging pendulum.

Personally, I love anything French so my favorite is this Paris wall clock. There’s even a jungle clock for those looking to complete a safari baby bedding theme. And who can resist Dr. Seuss?

Nursery clocks hanging on the wall are a focal point in any baby’s room. Choose one replete with imagination and style that your child can grow into. When she’s older, she may have fond memories of the lovely fairy that graced her wall as much as one little girl adored her fab-O plastic watch, glancing at its face now and then as if to tell time, on her merry way to school.

I was always the visual type. In one of my earliest memories, at about three or four years of age, I was sitting on the floor by my Mom’s feet, cutting out pictures and ads from the newspaper that appealed to me. Of course, it was just all letters and shapes. My little fingers struggled to hold the pair of scissors, and try as I might, the edges invariably came out jagged. I was lost in a cutting frenzy, happy and content, simply a little girl’s idea of heaven.

I remember this because I gathered the pile of cutouts – about a dozen – and carefully stored them in the bottom drawer of a wooden chest. It had an oriental motif with many grooves carved into its surface, and intricate floral inlays were scattered throughout. Over the years while rummaging around, I’d inevitably come across this same pile – jagged edges and all – and the memory of that tactile, blissful moment would be recalled.

It’s Just Like Playing

It’s no surprise then that later, I gravitated towards graphic design. For some 25 years, I got paid for cutting and pasting, and when computers came along, moving things around on screen. Observing me once, my mother commented, “It looks like you’re playing.” Imagine my excitement when, recently, I discovered baby nursery wall stickers. Because I don’t have kids (13 nieces and nephews notwithstanding), all this is new to me. My immediate thought was that whoever came up with this decorating idea is absolutely brilliant. Once again, it made me want to have a nursery with the walls as my canvas.

 Pre-Pasted Cutouts

Wall stickers come in two main forms. The first is pre-pasted cutouts. Fixed with water-activated glue, all you need to do is wet the glue-covered surface, then stick it on the desired surface. Pre-pasted cutouts are effectively a special form of wallpaper with baby-friendly designs. Apply them to the surface of virtually every object in the nursery ranging from the crib, to the mini cabinets, tables, baby chairs and if you’re really ambitious, even the rocking chair that’s used to lull the baby to sleep!

Self-Stick Decals

The other type of wall sticker is the self-stick design. The advantage that the self-stick variety has is the ability to relocate the sticker from one surface to another with no damage to the sticker itself. The only thing you need to ensure is that whatever surface it is placed on is clean as this will contribute to a longer usability.

So if you’ve come up with the core components of your baby nursery but are still grappling with what to do in terms of decoration, don’t worry. Wall stickers gel so well with the nursery environment that visitors will be blown away, and will find it difficult to believe that what you have is not a painted mural.
