Special Delivery: The Legend of Stork and Baby

For years, childbirth in Western culture has been associated with storks. Their images appear in baby shower invitations, announcements, and lawn stork rentals.

As with many aspects of modern culture that have been passed down through the generations, the reason for associating storks with childbirth and babies is not well known. So what is the reason for the connection between storks and babies? Surely what can a bird have in common with babies? Wouldn’t a dove or even a sparrow be a little more babylike as opposed to a bird which is given to eating from dumpsites?

Storks are common in Europe, especially in the Netherlands and Poland during the summer months, and will migrate to Africa during the winter. One of the distinct characteristics of the stork is the attachment they exhibit to their nests and will frequently return to the same nesting spot season after season. This habit shaped the belief of storks mating with a single partner for life since it was translated as fidelity, a desirable attribute. In later years however, research has shown that storks are actually serial monogamists and may choose a different mate each season; the attachment is more to its nest than it is to its mate. Yet another factor that fueled the fascination of storks’ association with babies was their tendency to stay with their young for a significant amount of time even after they learn to fly.

stork and babyBut there were also a number of amusing and less scientific reasons for the connection between storks and babies. One was the discomfort in the Victorian era (and still an issue for parents today) that surrounded the inevitable question from children on where babies come from. Instead of lunging into a potentially embarrassing explanation of the human reproduction process, some parents dismiss the question with the response “The stork brings babies.”

Another amusing reason has its roots in ancient European festivals. A good number of such events would take place towards the end of June and involved jubilant parties replete with intoxicating drinks. This led to the inevitable as sexual inhibition was much lower during the festivals. In line with human gestation, the effects would be evident nine months later as many women gave birth around this time more than any other. Interestingly, this was around the same time when storks would be returning from winter migration. Telling young ones that babies were brought by storks was thus relatively easy to do as the ‘evidence’ seemed irrefutable.

Why Baby Crib Mobiles are Adored by Moms and Babies Alike

A baby crib mobile is on many expectant parent’s wish list. Soothing and fun for the baby, it gives parents some welcome relief.

  • Share/Bookmark

Baby crib mobiles are one of those items that are loved equally by babies and parents. Since babies under six months old have difficulty grasping objects, and their tiny arms tend to be a bit jumpy and uncoordinated, it can be challenging to keep them entertained and stimulate their growing brains.

As a parent, that means you have to hold objects for long periods of time so your baby can explore, or you have to bring a mobile into the home.

The Colors

Newborns may not be able to make out the differences between colors at first, but once they have grown a bit, the contrast of white and black and the differences between bold, primary colors will stimulate their brains and grab their attention for long periods of time. Parents love the different color patterns available with musical mobiles because they can be coordinated into the nursery décor.

The Shapes

Most mobiles will have soft objects of different shapes dangling down over the crib. Bears and blocks are common shapes, though you can find a variety of others, especially if the mobile was designed to coordinate with a particular crib bedding set.

The Music

Small babies are naturally drawn to sound, especially soft music that lulls them to sleep or calms them when they are upset. While the music box naturally included with a mobile will become a major source of interest for babies, it will also bring you relief since you can entertain the baby in order to get something done or just relax for a few minutes.

The Motion

Most crib musical mobiles will wind up and turn in slow circles, allowing the hanging shapes to bounce and move around. This is great entertainment for babies of all ages and will help them train their eyes to follow along with motion.

Parents often choose baby crib mobiles that match the infant bedding set or the decorating theme in the nursery. One of the most prolific manufacturers of baby nursery bedding with coordinating mobile sets is Glenna Jean. Just about any infant bedding set in their collection offers a mobile with matching fabric or design elements picked up from the crib bedding. Crib musical mobiles aid in the natural development of babies while giving parents some welcome relief.

Baby Jealousy: Beware the Green-eyed Monster

Baby jealousy is an all-too-common reaction of children in growing families. Here are some useful tips to keep the green-eyed monster at bay.

  • Share/Bookmark

When my baby sister, Tessa, was born, I was almost four years old. I don’t remember my mother’s pregnancy, but I do recall the commotion after she gave birth. “You have a new baby sister, and she is SO beautiful and fair,” they gloated.

baby jealousy or sibling rivalry

The expression of this little boy says it all.

Back in the old country where I grew up, being fair skinned is desirable, remnants of Spanish colonial rule and the American occupation when foreigners controlled money and power while farmers toiled the fields under the hot sun. I was too young to understand this social distinction but, along with other exclamations of praise, I came to the quick conclusion: my sister is better than me. I remember feeling very, very jealous.

Arriving at the hospital, I was raised onto a chair propped beside the crib so that I could peer over the crib’s edge on tiptoes. I expected to see the most darling, cute baby I had ever seen but what I beheld confused me. She isn’t pretty at all, I thought. Plus, she had ugly spots all over her head. What were they saying, I wondered. Later, to my chagrin, Tessa’s spots disappeared and she blossomed into the kindest, most beautiful little girl with long, curly hair, and yes, fair skin. I learned to love her in many ways, but I also picked on her. It’s something I regret to this day.

Baby jealousy may be one of those basic human impulses that causes suffering to those involved. Place yourself in your child’s shoes for a moment. They may be considering thoughts like:

• I’m being replaced.
• Mom and dad love the baby more than me.
• Who’s going to pay attention to me?
• What about me?

When the baby is still in the oven, prepare your other kids for the imminent birth. Here are some things you can do.

• Let your children know how much they mean to you. Highlight their unique qualities to make them feel special.

• Now that they’re becoming a big sister or brother, tell them what it means with excitement.

• Sure, they’ll have a new playmate but also let them know they’ll need to wait for the baby to grow.

• Let them know you’ll be spending more time with the baby because babies can’t do things for themselves right away.

After the baby arrives, you’ll be at the mercy of your newborn’s eating and sleeping schedule. In spite of this challenging time, be mindful of your other children’s needs.

• Let your other children know they’re special by spending time with them also. Coordinate some fun activities and games–things they enjoy–including bedtime stories at night.

• Babies are adorable to behold especially when they’re sleeping. Share this darling moment with your kids. After the baby’s nap, pemit your children to contribute to the baby’s care by holding the baby. You’ll need to monitor this interaction closely but this chance to connect will foster a closer bond for the entire family.

girl kissing baby• Sing your children’s praises when they show kindness toward the baby. Make them know you’re proud of how nicely they’re filling the shoes of a big sister or brother.

• Your actions and words will affect your children’s behavior. Phrase your responses so the baby isn’t the reason for limited activities. For example, consider saying, “Mommy needs a little rest right now,” instead of “hush or you’ll wake the baby.”

Adjusting to the baby’s arrival will require time and patience. Try not to let household demands dampen the joys of being a parent. Accept offers of help from friends and relatives, and don’t worry if your housekeeping isn’t up to your normal standards. Spend time where it matters–with your family–and other things will fall into its rightful place.

Visiting Grandpa Washington’s House

While George and Martha Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, VA is truly grand, for their kids and grandkids, it may simply have been a most wonderful playground.

  • Share/Bookmark

Last month while in DC, I had a chance to visit George and Martha Washington’s home in nearby Mount Vernon, VA. It is spectacular. The house sits atop a hill with a breathtaking view overlooking the Potomac River. The grounds incorporate gardens, farms, a marina and various servant quarters, all connected by stairways and walkways lined with blossoming trees. For all its historical significance, I couldn’t help thinking this would’ve been a fantastic playground for kids.

Washingtons family

The Washington Family

George and Martha Washington married when they were both 27 at Martha’s estate, the White House Plantation northwest of Williamburg. She was a widow and had two surviving children, Jacky and Patsy, from her marriage to a wealthy plantation owner, Daniel Parke Custis. The Washingtons had a solid marriage but they had no children together; nevertheless, they were devoted to Martha’s children and grandchildren.

My own grandmother, who we called Lola Nieves, lived in a ranch-style home that sat on a large parcel of land. It’s quite modest and nothing like Mount Vernon by any means, but it had enough space for us—siblings and cousins—to run around, chase each other, and roll our bodies down some small hills. How we enjoyed those visits to grandma.

Imagine, then, how Jacky and Patsy must’ve enjoyed poking their heads around the many activities involved in the upkeep of this estate such as farming, horse carriage maintenance, shoe repairs, exterior painting and metalwork. The Washingtons liked to entertain which meant the household staff was kept busy with washing and ironing of laundry, cooking and curing meats, and gardening. Family life in Mount Vernon must have been idyllic in many ways.

As tourists, we were easily amused by bleating sheep, metalsmiths who forge nails and hooks the way they did back in the day, and lovely vistas of the grand river. There is much greenery to enjoy while strolling through kitchen and pleasure gardens all surrounded by a deep border of woods, groves of trees, and rolling meadows. The grounds at Mount Vernon are meticulously groomed and have been painstakingly restored for visitors to enjoy. Bring your kids but be prepared to wait in line for a view of the mansion’s interior.

Are French Baby Names Scrambling Your Eggs?

Looking for baby names that are somehow familiar but with a little flair, très chic and a bit unique? Ah, c’est magnifique. Are you feeling French today?

Eiffel Tower on girl's head

"I'm Special la la la". Butterfield and Robinson cover by Viva & Co., Toronto, Ontario.

My friend, Linda, works as a consultant in Ottawa, Canada’s buttoned-up seat of government where French is spoken just as readily as English … except Linda doesn’t speak French. Recently, she started a stint at a government agency. “I’m surrounded by French people,” she said in an email. “It sounds like birds chirping and ducks quacking to me (lots of la la la er la er and quack quack quack).” It was a classic comment from Linda whose funny observations always crack me up.

I, on the other hand, happily subjected myself to four years of high school French eons ago. Oui, oui. I love everything French. Aside from the language, I adore the food, especially rich cream sauces (béchamel and hollandaise) and stinky cheeses. I’m addicted to their pastries and almost named my business “Patachou,” a play on “pâte à choux” or pastry, simply because I liked its playful sound. Sad to say, my faded knowledge of the language now only allows me to read gourmet menus and order fancy wines en français, merci beaucoup.

It’s lucky for me, then, that I have a French middle name, Angelique. Go figure. Asian girl that I am, I asked my parents what had inspired it, hoping for some connection to an exotic-great-aunt-princess from the Loire in the sixteenth century. I’d even settle for an au pair version à la “The King and I” but no such luck. “Maybe there was something on the radio that day” was their best offer.

Coming from a large family where the naming tradition is a mile long, my parents had more important preoccupations that agonizing over baby names. Fortunately, my other siblings don’t mind their forgettable names also. I particularly like my younger sister’s middle name, Salome,* for the enfant terrible (terrible child) it conjures beside which the pius Angelique seems, well, bland. But I’m not complaining. “La la la,” as Linda says.

French names are lyrical, and have a finesse and sophistication that I like. If you’re thinking of giving your baby a little French flair, here are some of my favorite French names du jour:

Christophe (Christopher), Émile, Étienne (Steve), Julien, Laurent (Laurence), Patrice (Patrick), Rémy, Sébastien, Stéphane (Stephen), Thierry (Terry)

French Baby Girl Names

Adèle, Amélie (Amelia), Anastasie, Camille, Constance, Danielle, Isabelle, Simone, Thérèse

Many names are hyphenated such as Jean-Pierre, Marie-Élise, Jacque-Henri, and many masculine names become feminine with the addition of the suffix -e, -ette or -ine like Jacques and Jacqueline, Paul and Paulette, Jean and Jeanne.

You have to admit, these names sound like they belong to a movie, don’t they? And those accents … Madame, a little dijon on the side? If French isn’t your heritage and you’re not sure about this, just think of my parents. Ah, what’s a little je ne sais quoi? Ooh la la. Your baby will love it.

Disposable Bibs for Baby: Mommy’s Dirty Little Secret?

Disposable bibs join the ranks of plastic water bottles, paper towels and disposable diapers as necessary evils, even a godsend, and an environmental malice.

Little girl eating spaghetti.

Little girl eating spaghetti.

It was a precious moment. My niece was sitting on a high chair with a plate of rice softened with broth as her right hand grasped a spoon. She was having a blast, alternately trying to finagle some food into her mouth, and then merrily pounding the spoon just beyond the plate’s perimeter. Then the spoon caught the plate’s edge and in one fell swoop, the plate flipped upside down onto the floor along with its contents. Sound familiar?

It’s no wonder parents turn to disposable products in their quest to save time and bring a semblance of sanity into their lives. Babies are messy eaters and have potty bottoms. But with increasing concerns about the environment, what is the tipping point for acceptable consumptive behavior? You know that baby won’t tell, so in the privacy of your home, what choices do you make?

I suspect it still comes down to convenience and cost. I’m not riding my high horse because I use paper towels when I make bacon in the microwave, and I’ve contributed my share of plastic water bottles in landfills. But I’ve made baby steps in other ways, like using cloth napkins in place of paper.

Another tipping point for my decisions is a product’s visual appeal. I’ve purchased paper napkins because of their lovely patterns. I’ve also hoarded paper napkins because of their lovely patterns. What can I say? Pretty things feed my soul. That was my reaction when I was introduced to Cocoboheme’s line of disposable bibs. They’re not only gorgeous, they’re also environmentally friendly.

Featuring graphic animals juxtaposed against a bed of flowers and other patterns, Cocobohème’s bibs are created from potato starch and are designed to last at least a couple of years. These bibs are made with a biopolymer that creates no greenhouse gas emissions, plus they’re 100% bio-degradable and can be disposed in your compost. As you know, this is unlike other disposable consumables so take heart , this convenient and pretty work of art isn’t going to be one of your dirty little secrets.

Baby on a Budget? Get on Board with the New Reality.

Having your first baby is a life-changing experience. With so many exciting things to contemplate, it’s no wonder that financial concerns are often pushed aside.

  • Share/Bookmark

Picking a name, buying the cutest, teeniest clothes and setting up the baby nursery (how fun!) are all things that require your attention. But there are financial issues that you should attend to prior to your baby’s arrival. Thankfully, you have nine months to accomplish a myriad of tasks before the stork drops off your little bundle.

Rub Your Belly Counterclockwise 5X

You may want to invoke your financial guides because preparing for a baby’s arrival while maintaining your current lifestyle will need some creative magic and focus. For at least a short time after the baby is born, you’ll likely be forced to live on a smaller salary. Offset this financial hardship by setting aside extra money throughout your pregnancy. This money will serve as a cushion during maternity leave.

Now Hop Around on One Foot

If it’s possible to live off one spouse’s income, try this for the entire nine months. This will give you a taste of what life would be like if one of you decides to stay home permanently with the child. Additionally, experts recommend having three to six months’ living expenses in a savings account in case of an emergency. Living off one income now will give your savings a significant boost.

Okay, Start Whistling

If you enjoy shopping, then the fun begins. Baby gear is expensive and although there are many items that you can probably live without, you will inevitably need to purchase a car seat, diapers, clothing, and a crib bedding set. Don’t be afraid to seek second hand items. As long as they are clean and safe, there’s no reason to spend money buying brand new items. Remember, babies grow quickly and only use things like swings and bouncy seats for a short period of time. Spend wisely and buy only what you truly need.

There’s no replacement for the joy a baby brings to your life. This is an exciting time indeed. Think ahead and plan for every stage of the process to help to alleviate financial stress and put your mind at ease.

Don’t Cry for Me, Isabella. The Curse of Common Baby Names.

Baby names are much like clothing trends: when you look at a certain year or decade, it’s pretty easy to date them by style. Some choices, like Isabella, show up for an entire decade before fading out.

  • Share/Bookmark

My name is Victoria. When I was a child, I disliked it very much, mostly because it was both traditional and common, at least in Manila where I spent my early years. I even shared the name with my older sister, Rosario Victoria, and I was Victoria Angelique.

Ah, see, there was a reason. My father was a politician, and he won his first term of office when my sister was born, followed four years later during his second term when I was born. But growing up, I didn’t care for any reason. I simply felt ordinary.

In one grade school homeroom class, there were four of us Victorias. We had permanent seats for the duration of the school year, and it just so happened that three of us were seated in the same rear left quadrant of the classroom, all in the teacher’s same line of sight.

The convention in my strict Catholic school was to stand up when called to answer a question. It was considered a sign of respect, and to do otherwise would’ve meant big trouble. This often lent a Three Stooges quality for a few seconds after “Victoria” was called, beginning with a series of quick glances at each other, then at the teacher, before the Victorias would nervously take turns standing up and sitting down.

Now I realize having a name associated with “victory” isn’t all bad, especially since my name is more unique in the U.S. where I now live.  Sure, it’s traditional, but it has a rich pedigree, thanks to one queen, and is full of revolutionary fervor, as in “Hasta la victoria siempre”. And who can say the name without wanting to channel The Kinks who wailed the name into perpetuity?

So, mothers, take heed. If you’re on the cusp of naming your baby girl Emma, Isabella, Olivia, Ava or Sophia – popular baby girls’ names in recent years – give it some pause. I love all those names, especially “Isabella”, of course, but maybe down the road, your daughter will thank you for being different rather than being trendy.
