Divine Humor in Children’s Bedding

Can a childless wonder have an affinity for infant bedding sets, girls and boys bedding, and teen bedding? Does the universe have a sense of humor?

The Ugly Duckling wasn’t the beginning. Shelagh, my former common-law sister-in-law (I know, I know) replied to my “help name my company” email with a gasp (yes, girl, I heard it through your typing). “Are you having a baby or something???” That made me laugh. Never mind that I’m too old to have kids. The answer is still a resounding, “NO!”

So, childless wonder that I am (and not so unhappily, I might add), here I am embarking on a business full of cute and cuddly children’s bedding, and absolutely loving it. Now how ironic is that? I like working with pretty things, and many of these crib bedding sets are just too adorable for words.

Truly, working with kids bedding makes me want to have a nursery. Maybe it’s my way of revisiting and compensating for my quilt-less, bumper-less, bedskirt-less childhood (oh, the sadness of it all!), or childless motherhood… whatever. All I know is that I’m getting to play again somehow, like I did with dolls, and I get to choose what gorgeous bedding sets to sell.

Today, I chose Babylicious. Gotta love that name. They have three infant bedding sets in the same big-dot-and-stripe style with such fresh color combinations appropriately reflected in their collections’ names: Haze, Citrus and Sorbet. Yummy, aren’t they? They even have a “yummy blanket” which, as you can expect, has fleece on one side. This collection is simple yet cheerful, practical and ridiculously affordable.

As for that nursery I mentioned, maybe I’ll wait to live vicariously through my niece who’s getting married later this year. But then again, does she even want kids? I feel the Universe winding up for another pitch…

And so it was, Beautiful & Ugly Children’s Bedding

Bella & Fella Children’s Bedding is pleasantly surprised to find itself the “ugly duckling” of the baby crib bedding world, eagerly set to spread its wings.

It wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. The name, that is. After coming up with a list of over a dozen possible monikers for my new online business, I sent an informal and very unscientific email survey to a small, select group of friends and family, asking for their vote. When I received their feedback, I realized this wasn’t going to be easy. There was little concensus. Also, I decided some names were too young (Lullaby Bedding) for my product lines (crib to teen bedding), or feminine (Buttercup), foreign and obscure (Presto Bambino, Bonjour Maman), even corny (Angelina Bedding, very jolie indeed). Happily, I settled on one I had liked from the beginning, Bella & Fella Children’s Bedding. My friend, Linda, suggested including the ampersand to my original “Bella Fella”, and I was happy to indulge. I have a graphic design background, and designers love the graceful curves of ampersands. Also, I figured Bella & Fella was cute and memorable, and it covered the bases (a girl and a boy). It was fun and casual (as in “Hey there, little fella!”), popular (Bella, Isabella and Isabelle have topped baby girls’ names in recent years) and exotic (“Ay, que bella!”) all at once. Plus, the rhyme imparted an uplifting, silly feel that I liked. So off I went, and in a few clicks, I reserved my rightful place in cyberspace. Bella-Fella.com was now official. I tend to work quickly, and so by the end of the second day, I had a live website with over two dozen products uploaded. I was smokin’ and feeling pretty darn good about it. Then later that night, an email came through from a good friend, Maureen, a bilingual instructor working in Toronto. Maureen reminded me that in Spanish, the double “L” is pronounced like a “Y”, so “Fella” is pronounced “Fea” which means ugly. There it was. After all that agonizing over a company name, I ended up with Beautiful & Ugly Bedding. Funny thing was, somehow I still liked the name. It made me think of “The Ugly Duckling”, a story of triumph, and who doesn’t like cheering for the underdog? Besides, that’s where Bella & Fella Bedding sits, a new company with barely a pitter patter on Google’s radar screen, completely buried by tough competition. So I’m rolling up my sleeves. Watch out, baby crib bedding world. This little duckling has arrived.
