Pink Pagoda Baby Girls Crib Bedding: Whistle & Wink’s Nod to Asia

The Pink Pagoda baby nursery bedding from Whistle & Wink reinterprets a classical asian motif with whimsy and elegance, a fresh take with an exotic flair.

My parents were avid travelers who were fortunate to have many opportunities to indulge this interest, some by way of work, and others for discovery’s sake. Although my siblings and I were always left in capable care, their absences were hard on me as a little girl. Then again, there was always a bittersweet upside to their escapes. I could look forward to their return when they would come laden with gifts and souvenirs, some practical like the latest pocket camera from Hongkong, while others were fantastically exotic, like ornate tribal jewelry from Afghanistan–novel play things stored for later use, and never to be seen again.

Occasionally, there would be a significant purchase like black lacquered chests from China. Over time, my parents accumulated four of these Oriental chests, most of them decorated with figures wearing traditional long robes, standing next to a pagoda in a garden. Set against an idyllic landscape of serene tranquility or striking, rugged beauty, these scenes were exotic even for an Asian girl like me who grew up in its more tropical regions, trading thatched-roof bamboo homes for pagodas and coconut trees for cherry blossoms. So it is that I share with westerners the same exotic regard for charming pagodas and graceful asian figures walking among cherry trees.

Now, this familiar motif has been reinterpreted whimsically in children’s bedding. Whistle & Wink’s Pink Pagoda baby nursery bedding and girls bedding features beautifully crafted pink embroidery details and appliqués. After all, what’s more coveted than pink bedding for a little girl? Other fresh colors like lime green and light brown animate interesting details like trees, singing bluebirds, goldfish, a graceful little bridge, butterflies and temples. What you have is a treasured addition to any girl’s room, a modern take on a classic theme with an exotic flair.

I’m Not in Kansas Anymore

When I was in my early twenties, I was still living at home. My good friend, Maureen, dropped by my parent’s very modest, semi-detached Victorian house. We were chatting out on the sidewalk, standing by the sloping patch of grass—maybe only 18 feet wide—that qualified as our front yard. It was littered with dandelions. Upon noticing them, I said, “Aren’t they so pretty?” I meant it. Maureen started laughing. “They’re weeds!” she exclaimed.

Of course they are but at the time, I didn’t know it. I was still a relative newcomer, trying to be Canadian, trying to fit in. I was fortunate enough to have been raised speaking English, and with an ear for language intonations, I had tamed my accent so quickly that many were surprised to learn I wasn’t born there. Sometimes, though, my efforts to blend in would be sabotaged. This was one of them. I had come from a place where flowers were flowers and grass was a luxury. Other than trees, weeds were everything else.

Now, I can’t look at a dandelion without thinking it’s just a weed. But it’s still a pretty little flower, a delicate cousin to the much beloved sunflower. Along with daisies, they all grow profusely and cast their yellow radiance for everyone to enjoy. And they brighten a room like no other. That’s what I like about Maya Baby Nursery Bedding by Glenna Jean.

Take a Potion of Courage

Definitely not a wilting wallflower, Maya is shamelessly brilliant, and makes me feel like I’m basking in sunshine. Here’s how the manufacturer describes this crib bedding set: An eco theme, Maya’s combination of bold sunflower and daisy prints with earth oriented colors is an edgy, fashion-forward approach to nursery design. Delightfully modern styling is combined with a freshly subtle color palette of warm bark, muted gray and organic yellow hues.

Maya baby nursery bedding is a 4-pc set that includes bumpers, quilt, crib sheet and crib skirt. Go one step further and complete the look with coordinating decor like window panels, valances, pillows, and a musical mobile.

I like this crib bedding set because it’s the opposite of frilly lace (although I like that, too), and because it screams abundance and happiness. I like it because it reminds me of one lovely Tuscan summer when seas of sunflowers waved a warm welcome to the delight of all passengers in our train. Most of all, I like it because it reminds me of that one sunny day when a young girl admired the dandelion’s beauty for what it was, and today, still appreciates it for its modest brilliance. What better way to wake up a baby’s room than with a little bit of sunshine.

Washing Baby Laundry Isn’t Just For Babies

Washing baby laundry may require some special care, but does it warrant the “kid glove” treatment?

  • Share/Bookmark

The first time I discovered the joys of an electric washing machine was in 1977. Before then, I lived in the Far East where labor is cheap but appliances are a luxury so consequently, almost all laundry is hand washed. Those who live in rural villages bring their laundry to nearby rivers where part of the ritual is to wring out clothes and then forcefully beat them onto rocks to free the dirt or release the remaining soapy water.

Washing laundry at the river.

I’ve seen this in movies where the tropical setting and soothing sounds of nature can make the chore seem like a peaceful and pleasant escape. The closest I ever got to witnessing this in person—at least a variation of it—was behind our house, and it made me cringe.

Where no river runs through it

Living in a dense urban center, the washing of dirty laundry happens in a less idyllic setting, and takes on a much different tone. A very large, flat basin of soapy water is used to soak garments for hours. It’s always surprised me how much filth can rise to the surface, unfettered. After some rinsing and scrubbing, the laundry is laid on a hard, clear surface, and the heck beaten out of it, this time with a wooden, flat paddle about 4″ wide and a foot and a half long. You can imagine how cathartic this can be for anyone looking to release some tension. It’s usually at this point that I’ve fled.

Now, living in the Land of Appliances, I’m in love with my electric clothes washer and dryer. Mine even makes pinball-like sounds when turned on… music to my ears. Such great inventions I can’t live without, as I’m sure would be even more the case for parents with newborns and toddlers. So what’s different about washing baby laundry?

When “baby” is a dirty word

To begin, babies produce an endless pile of dirty laundry and the sooner you wash them, the better. You already know I’m an advocate of soaking, so at the very least, toss the laundry in soapy water because even some stains that have set will loosen. According to Martha Stewart, “Soaps such as Ivory and Lux are made to leave fabric soft, and they contain few unnecessary additives that can cause irritation.”

If, however, stains don’t lift, it may be time to use a stronger detergent which is to say, throw the baby laundry in with the rest of ‘em. Depending on the stain source (milk, food, spit-up, baby oil, juices or leaky diapers), additional remedies may be required but remember that harsh detergents and fabric softeners with fragrances can irritate a baby’s skin. Just be attentive to any signs of allergic reaction like redness or rashes before investing in a dye-free, perfume-free product. Lastly, the verdict is out regarding the use of hot or cold water but certainly double rinse each load to remove any soapy residue. This is not only true for baby nursery bedding but also for diapers, the culprit of too many diaper rashes.

Take a trip down the river

So, does baby laundry need the “kid glove” treatment? Not necessarily so, and in today’s world of convenience, nor do I think the use of a wooden paddle is necessary (although you have to admit, out of context, it would present a very curious image to a passerby). There are many variables to the laundry process that make for a happy baby, things like different cleaning agents, water temperatures, etc., so experiment and see what works. Don’t worry, even if your baby can’t talk, he’ll let you know if you’re singing the right tune going down the little river.
