Position the crib away from nursery windows, especially those that have dangling cords. Even drapes pose a possible hazard, including the example shown here.

The time to start thinking about your child’s safety around windows in the nursery is the moment you start designing and decorating. The crib needs to be placed as far away from the window as possible and the type of window coverings used need to be thought out carefully.

Even if the crib is placed in a corner on the opposite end of the nursery, you have to be very cautious about any window coverings that have dangling rope cords. Children of all ages can get their necks caught in these cords and strangle themselves to death. That’s not the image you want to think about when designing your nursery, but it is something you have to consider for the safety of your child.

Make sure cords are completely secured high toward the top of the window. If you’re looking to make a new purchase, consider the latest window cover offerings that use twirl wands, or coverings that can be operated by one touch or remote control.
